LOUNYS
French painter based in Paris

Lounys originates from Paris, he is of Algerian and Berber descent. He is currently based between New York and Paris. His art is voracious as his practice questions the very nature of survival in its contemporary form. He studies the visual vernacular as his subject matter references. Satirical cartoons while he augments political and social personals through his use of caricature. His influences stem from contemporary pop and conceptual art movements. His primary technique is auto- matic-drawing, reminiscent of surrealist explorations of the 1920s. He draws upon dreams, society, unfiltered thoughts, and emotions as a process in his works.

The fundamental ethos behind Lounys’ practice comes from his father, who came to Paris before the Algerian War of Independence with only one piece of luggage in hand. He quickly became the head of his household at a young age. Lounys’ knows that a life of sacrifice and devotion can tell the most authentic narrative, this is the very fuel behind his works. His primary subject matter originates from traditional Berber Kabyles tattoo art whilst incorporating vivid colors inspired by pop art aesthetics.

He co-founded the Ereska Art Collective in Saint-Denis, where he organized and participated in exhibitions, performances, and designed frescoes for major ven- ues throughout Europe. He has exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and Europe. His work sits in notable private collections worldwide. Inspired by his father, Berber ancestry, and contemporary art movements from the 80s and 90s; Lounys dissects the notion of art as purely aesthetic but focuses on the raw lines and shapes that make up his cosmology.
